Sunset Church of Christ - About Us | Church Planting Church of Christ | Springfield Missouri Church of Christ - Sunset

Sunset's History

The Sunset Church of Christ is the result of a merger between the Broadway and Madison Church of Christ and the Scenic and Weaver Road Church of Christ. These churches with histories that go back to the early part of the 20th Century came together in March of 1985. Construction began on a new building at the corner of Fort & Sunset and the first services were held in August of 1986.

Sunset Church of Christ has completed 20 years of growth and unity. Rapid growth saw the need for moving to two services on Sunday mornings in 1995. In 1997 construction of a new education wing almost doubled the size of the existing building. Again in 2002 modifications allowed for expanded use of the auditorium and in 2004 consturction of a new office and education wing was completed.

But we are a church planting church. Having been blessed with much growth in the past decade, a decision was made not to become a mega-church. Instead, with God's help our goal has been to plant as many congregations in the greater Springfield area as we can.

In December of 2000 the Union Hill congregation was planted in Nixa. Just under 100 members were sent out from Sunset. And the first Sunday in 2006 marked the beginning of the Brookline Church of Christ. On that Sunday around 130 went out from Sunset.

Friendliness

As a visitor, you will be welcomed with warmth and friendliness. We believe in love and friendship toward each other regardless of gender, social or ethnic differences. (Mt. 22:36-40)

Singing

A cappella congregational singing is a part of every worship service. Members of the congregation blend their voices together in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. The purpose is to praise God, to teach and to admonish one another. (Eph. 5:19, Col. 3:16)

Prayer

During worship services, public prayers are led by men. Prayer is a vital source of strength in a christian's life. We pray to the Lord in private and in the worship assembly. (1 Tim. 2:8-13)

The Lord's Supper

It was a practice of the early church to eat the Lord's supper as a memorial to Christ's death on the cross. On the first day of each week, we partake of the un- leavened bread and the fruit of the vine as an act of communion with Christ. (Mt. 26:26-29)

Teaching

We believe the Bible to be an inspired, authoritative book. As a result, Bible teaching is a part of every worship service and Bible class. (2 Tim. 3:16-17)
